It was in my late teens that I began practicing yoga in earnest. To be honest what drew me in at first was definitely the athletic elements of the practice. Coming of age I was lacking a sense of direction and purpose, thus I began to fall in love with the discipline, empowerment and grace that the practice seemed to install in me. Even though since then my relationship with yoga has reshaped itself many times and continues to do so, I still hold these values close to heart.
In the years to come while being a fine art student at universities in Austria, Australia and Japan, I became obsessed with yoga. I wanted to see all the yoga that was out there. So I came to practice with great teachers from Ashtanga, Classical Hatha, Power, Vinyasa, Kundalini, Forrest, Iyengar, Jivamukti ,Yin and Anusara. What I've gained from the practice & study, regardless of style and tradition is an understanding that no matter what the outer circumstance may be, we always are free to choose a more spacious inner environment of our mind & heart.
It was around 2009 when I realised I wanted to teach. At the time I was an avid student of Anusara Yoga, an elegant yoga system that emphasises a life-affirming philosophy & clear alignment principles. In 2010 I began teaching. Since then I have taught internationally in Vienna, Bali and Singapore. Apart from regular classes, I’ve been leading workshops, retreats, coursed, anatomy & theory labs.
On the path there have been of course many great teachers who taught me invaluable lessons. But I’d say most of what I know about yoga and communicating it, I really have learnt from Ross Rayburn. His undogmatic way of teaching philosophy, asana and anatomy have had a huge impact on me as a student, teacher and person. He ignited a sincere passion for yoga therapy in me and continues to remind me to make yoga about spirit first.
Other important influences include Ally Bogard, Tara Judelle, Lawrence Milman, who each in their own way remind me of the importance of independent inquiry.
My own teaching these days is to be found outside the walls of systems. I look at yoga as medicine, which is meant to unravel and evolve as we do over time. I emphasise a spaciousness in attitude, breath and artful alignment. I do believe in all my heart that if we practice with openness and dedication, yoga will ground and elevate us physically, mentally and spiritually. I believe this to be true for everyone, regardless of age, gender, level of flexibility/strength/fitness. In my classes I create an experience that is mindful and yet light-hearted, poetic and yet real, safe and yet challenging.
I do hope yoga continues to grow, evolve and serve us in seizing our true potential.
